Imagine sinking into your sofa, surrounded by pillows that transform your space into a serene coastal sanctuary. The perfect throw pillow combination can elevate your living room from ordinary to extraordinary—creating your personal coastal paradise with just a few strategic accents.
At Totally Coast, we've developed a system to help you create stunning coastal throw pillow combinations without the confusion. Whether you're just beginning your coastal styling journey or looking to refresh your existing space, these steps will guide you to pillow perfection. We'll break it down into simple, actionable decisions, using easy-to-follow explanations and coastal-inspired analogies to make the process fun and approachable.
The key that led us to creating this system was realizing that:
"Stunning Coastal Pillow Combinations always include
Pillows from at least 2 to 3 different Coastal Styles"
This is the reason a beginner or intermediary coastal styling enthusiast can find it difficult to create their dream coastal throw pillow combination. They haven't learned how to identify the different pattern sub-styles within the general "Coastal Style", and thus be able to skillfully match them together. This is the problem we solve with our system.
But, before we get into STEP 1, here is a....
Creating a beautifully coordinated coastal throw pillow arrangement for your living room sofa doesn't have to be overwhelming. The secret lies in a simple but powerful design strategy:
But, what does this mean when applied to choosing a Coastal Throw Pillow combination for your sofa?
This means beginning your styling journey with broad choices—like the overall mood (formal vs casual) and the coastal pattern styles—before diving into the nitty gritty of specific colors, specific pillow patterns, and the arrangement.
Instead of diving straight into hunting for individual pillows, we guide you to make broader, foundational decisions first. This approach simplifies the process and dramatically improves the final outcome, ensuring your styling choices are cohesive and impactful.
Why Take this Approach?
Starting with general styling decisions (such as whether you want a formal or casual look, or selecting your favorite coastal pattern categories) helps you develop a clear vision for your space. This keeps the process simple and enjoyable—you’re making one decision at a time, without feeling overwhelmed by a sea of options all at once.
When you use this method, you:
Set a solid foundation for your style, ensuring all your later choices fit together effortlessly.
Avoid decision fatigue, since you’re not trying to pick the perfect pillow, color, and pattern all at the same time.
End up with a beautifully coordinated sofa, because every detailed choice builds logically upon the previous step.
Here's why taking this "Go General, Then Specific" journey through our steps is so effective:
This is your very first, most general decision – establishing the overall vibe. It's like deciding if your coastal getaway is a chic resort or a cozy beach cottage. This single choice immediately filters countless pillow options
Here, you're not picking specific patterns yet, but rather the types of coastal patterns that resonate with you (e.g., "Botanical Coastal" or "Modern Coastal"). This keeps your focus broad and harmonious.
You move from your room's existing colors to a focused pillow palette, then finally to the specific colors for each pillow. This stepwise refinement ensures every color choice supports your overall scheme
Now, with your style, patterns, and colors decided, you're ready to tackle the specifics of arrangement, working our how many of each pillow, then knowing each pillow will fit perfectly into your vision.
By purposefully starting with these bigger picture decisions, you reduce decision fatigue, build confidence with each choice, and ultimately create a stunning, cohesive coastal pillow combination you'll absolutely love—transforming your sofa into a true seaside sanctuary.
The very first step in creating your coastal pillow arrangement is to decide on your overall style foundation—whether you lean toward formal or casual. This choice is like setting the mood for your space: it influences how you arrange your pillows and sets the tone for everything that follows. Don't worry if you're new to this; it's simply about picking what feels right for your home and personality. We'll break it down clearly below to help you choose.
This option gives your space a classic and elegant coastal feel, like a polished seaside resort.
It involves using identical pillows placed in a mirrored way on both sides of your sofa (e.g., the same pillow on the left matches the one on the right).
The result is a balanced and orderly look that feels calm and put-together.
Think of it as a smooth, serene ocean horizon where everything lines up perfectly.
Best for: Homes where you want a more refined or traditional coastal vibe, such as in formal living areas or spaces with classic furniture.
This choice creates a relaxed, welcoming beach house atmosphere, perfect for everyday coastal living.
It means mixing different pillows in varied positions without perfect matching (e.g., one side might have two pillows while the other has three).
The outcome is an effortless, natural-looking arrangement that feels lived-in and inviting.
Imagine seashells scattered casually along the sandy shore—no strict order, just beautiful organic charm.
Best for: Cozy coastal cottages, family rooms, or any space where you want a laid-back, relaxing feel.
"Choosing between formal versus casual" is the most general of style choices—this is simply about identifying your personal preference for the foundation of your entire coastal style.
INSTRUCTIONS:
On a piece of paper write down your choice - "Formal" or "Casual".
The next step is to divide your pillows into 2 groups.
On your piece of paper, write down the following 2 groups:
Group 1: "SIGNATURE" Pillow Group
Group 2: "SUPPORTER" Pillows Group
These are your statement pieces—the pillows that will draw the eye and establish your coastal theme most clearly.
This group will contain the most decorative pattern/s. It will essentially contain your "Signature" pillow/s (also known as your "Hero") i.e. the pillow/s that capture the most attention and play the lead role in your coastal pillow styling story. By the end of this pillow styling process your "Signature Pillows"group will contain:
For Formal: 1 to 2 pillows with same decorative pattern (from same Coastal Style).
For Casual: 1 to 2 pillows with different decorative patterns (from same Coastal Style).
These complement your signature pillows, providing balance, depth, and cohesion to your arrangement without competing for attention. Think of these as the dependable co-stars, and thus are less decorative than your Signature PIllows.
By the end of this pillow styling process your "Supporter Pillows Group" will contain:
For Formal: 1 pair of pillows of same pattern and color - or - 2 pairs of different pattern and color pillows (example below)
For Casual: 2-4 pillows - 1 pair from same Coastal Pattern Style and different patterns, plus another pair from another Coastal Pattern Style and different patterns (see example below)
When it comes to accessorizing with coastal throw pillows, selecting the right patterns can transform your space from ordinary to stunning.
Following are the 6 COASTAL PATTERN STYLES (we recommend to use) to identify your favorite style/s for each pillow group - ordered from those with the least coastal reference to strongest coastal reference:
1. Minimalist Coastal - Most Subtle Coastal Reference.
This is the most minimalist of all coastal styles and it predominantly are blocks of color - i.e. uses the color as its most decorative coastal statement of its pillows. A subtle texture (e.g. linen texture) can be used for adding more interest. This is the most serene of all coastal sub-styles.
2. Modern Coastal - Subtle Coastal Reference.
Steps up from minimalist by using fine lines, very subtle geometric/line patterns, or subtle abstract interpretations of natural elements. (e.g. thin geometric grids). These subtle references maintain a level of sophisticated modern style.
3. Classic Coastal - Moderate Coastal Reference.
These are the iconic expressions of coastal style which use bolder stripes including the classic Cabana Stripes, Awning Stripes and larger abstract coastal shapes. These are typically more pronounced stripes, checks, or larger-scaled contemporary patterns
4. Ornate Coastal - Moderate Coastal Reference
This coastal pattern sub-category includes elegant floral and decorative patterns that you would know as Hamptons style, Coastal Grandmother, Coastal Granddaughter and Chinoiserie. The common design values are elegance and decorative. They all have a refined, sophisticated coastal flair.
5. Botanical Coastal - Strong Coastal Reference
These patterns & designs include lush botanicals, palm trees, varied palm leaf patterns, coastal plants and flower designs, and tropical style patterns that bring a coastal natural botanical element into your coastal style living room or home.
6. Beach Coastal - Strongest Coastal Reference
These are explicitly beach and ocean themed patterns and designs – such as seashells, starfish, coral, nautical motifs (e.g. anchors etc.) and marine life imagery. (e.g., realistic shell prints, abstract fish designs). These say "coastal" loud and clear.
You will discover the details of each of these COASTAL PATTERN SUB-STYLES in the steps below. We recommend using these style categories as they are the most general classifications for coastal sub-styles. We have found they make it easy to classify any coastal pillow/pattern you may find on the internet into a pattern category.
As mentioned above, the styles of your patterns come first. And more speicifcally that of your "Signature Pattern Group".
Thus, you are choosing your favorite Coastal Pattern Style first. This starts your pillow styling journey with a general style choice - i.e. identifying the style of "Coastal Pattern" for your Signature PIllow Group. This helps you identify the "Coastal Style" you love the most and want to express with your throw pillows.
This approach then makes your first decision easier - you are just choosing "a category" you love, not immediately trying to find the actual pillow with the perfect pattern in the color you love, and in the right size etc.
Instead, it is only after you this step that you then progress to choosing the style/s of your "Supporter Pillows Group", then your Color Palette, that you start filtering down to specific coastal pillow designs.
When choosing your signature pattern style, think about the overall "strength" of the coastal reference you want.
Note: Coastal patterns aren't one-size-fits-all; they range from subtle whispers to bold statements.
1. Click on the arrows to scroll though the different Coastal Pattern Styles below.
2. Click on the BIG Buttons to explore style further. On our Totally Coast store you will discover lots of different coastal pillow patterns that belong in each category.
Discover what you would love as the category for your most decorative pattern. Take you time and there are no rules. It's about what you love.
Once you have decided, write it down under your "Signature Style Group".
In this step you choose 1-3 styles of coastal patterns to play supporting roles to your most decorative "Signature Pattern Style" (you chose in the previous step).
The amount of "coastal reference" - of these styles - can range from being the same as your Signature Style, to having the least amount of coastal reference e.g. having a Minimalist Coastal style. The key is it has to have the same amount or less coastal reference to that of your Signature Pillow Group.
TIP: Think about the overall - combined - "strength" of the coastal reference you want from your entire pillow combination, PLUS how much of a relaxing, serene essence you desire for your living room space - the closer your Supporter style/s get to the "Minimalist Coastal" style side of the spectrum the more serene, relaxing energy you add to your pillow combination.
From the six (6) different Coastal Pattern/Design categories below,
choose 1 - 3 that you would love as the SUPPORTING pattern styles in your throw pillow combination.
First choose your most decorative Supporter Pattern Style/s. Scroll through the categories below until you get to the category of your Signature Style - start from there and scroll -style by style - towards the most subtle coastal reference style, considering each style's suitability as one of your Supporter Pillow/s as you go. This time we're starting at "Style Six - Beach Coastal" and scrolling - style by style - towards the "Minimalist Coastal" style.
Next repeat the process but choose your least decorative Supporter Pattern Style (Note: both can be from the same Supporter style category). If you have a "Casual Foundation " style you can choose up to 3 different Supporter styles.
Choose at least one Supporter Style that is less decorative + has less coastal reference than you Signature Style. This maintains a balance to your pillow combination that creates a relaxing essence.
You can choose one Supporter Style from the same style category as your Signature Style if you want to empahasize that style statement. You can use a more muted color and different scale pattern to make it support (and not compete with) your Signature Style.
The most effective method is to work your way through the categories of "Coastal Pattern Styles" below, starting from most decorative (with strongest coastal reference) to the least decorative (most subtle coastal reference) category.
As you choose your Supporter Styles write them down under your "Supporters Pillow Group" heading.
To create a sophisticated modern coastal aesthetic keep your colors muted, not vibrant—these muted colors appear more luxurious and relaxing against both white/neutral walls, and your white sofa.
DESIGNER TIP: If 90% or more of your living room is white + neutrals, i.e. the only accents you have are from the colors of the wood/natural fibers of your furntiure and plants, and your artwork has mostly muted colors,...then you essentially can choose white and neutrals PLUS the coastal colors (eg. blues, seafoam greens etc) you would love for your throw pillows. ...And then add pieces of decor around your room in at least your Signature color.
Your goal is to create a cohesive look by choosing 2–4 main colors for your pillows that echo your room's harmony and contrast. Limit your palette to maintain a tranquil, coastal vibe—think soothing blues, natural whites, sandy beiges, and the occasional pop of coastal green or coral.
In the room below the Primary color is white, the secondary color is blue, and the Accent color is a sandy tan brown.
Start by carefully observing your room’s color palette. When you connect to these colors with your pillow combination, you will create a feeling of flow and harmony.
Look around your room and identify:
Primary Color/s: the 1 or 2 dominant hues (wall color, rug, sofa) - whites, greys &/or neutrals (sandy beige etc.)
Secondary Colors: next most common colors in room (curtains, art, and furniture),
Accent Colors: Lesser used colors that stand out around the room (decor, plants, artwork).
With your pillow color palette established, turn your attention to the star of your arrangement: the Signature "Hero" Pillow. This pillow, featuring your chosen Signature Pattern Style, should draw the eye while seamlessly integrating with your room. The goal is to make it stand out without overpowering—think of it as a darker seashell amid neutral sands.
Why This Step Matters: The Signature Pillow anchors your design, so its color choice reinforces the coastal theme and creates a focal point. By selecting it first, you establish a color hierarchy that guides the supporting pillows, maintaining balance and visual flow.
1. Review Your Palette and Pattern Style: Reference your 3-5 core colors and the Signature Pattern Style (e.g., Ornate Coastal with detailed florals). Choose a color that creates the feeling your desire—bolder or deeper shades if you want to make a stronger statement and add more energy, while softer lighter tones create a more serene and relaxing look and feel. Keep both darker and lighter shades more on the muted side (less vibrant/saturated) to create a more refined look.
2. Ensure It Stands Out Yet Complements Your Room:
Stand Out: Opt for the most contrasting color in your color palette (e.g., a deep navy for a neutral room) to make the pillow/s a focal point amongst the other pillows.
Complement: It should echo a key room element, like artwork, key decor or upholstery, while aligning with coastal vibes. For example, if your room has soft blue accents, you can select a slightly deeper blue for subtle elevation.
3. Test for Harmony: Visualize or mock up the color in context. Does it enhance the room's mood? For formal styles, choose sophisticated, more muted shades of color; for casual, you have a bigger range to choose from - from muted shades to more vibrant colors (but still keep relatively muted to create a relaxing vibe).
Design Tips:
If your Signature Pattern is highly referential (e.g., Beach Coastal with shells), pair it with a muted background color to avoid overwhelming.
The Signature color should appear in at least one other room element for cohesion, preventing it from feeling isolated.
Slight variations in your Signature Pillow color compared to the same color in your room are usually O.K. Note: The greater the distant between the position of the Signature pillow/s and that color in your room, the greater the relative variation can be, without severing the connection.
By thoughtfully coloring your Signature Pillow, you create a compelling focal point that elevates the entire arrangement while staying true to your room's palette and coastal aesthetic.
4. Write down the names of your chosen color/s on your piece of paper. Create a reference of the color on your computer (if you can).
With your Signature Pillow's color locked in, it's time to select the colors for your Supporter Complimentary Pillows. The aim is for these colors to harmonize beautifully with the Signature Pillow and integrate seamlessly into your overall room (and pillow) color palette.
Why This Step Matters: Supporting pillows provide harmony and depth, ensuring the arrangement feels collected rather than mismatched. This step refines your palette's application, transitioning from general choices to specific, purposefully assigning colors that amplify the relaxing coastal essence.
1. Reference the Hierarchy: Start with your Signature Pillow's color as the guide. Supporting colors should be subtler—draw from the remaining palette shades that complement rather than compete.
2. Assign for Harmony: (Note: Always include white in at least 1 Support Pillow)
Primary Supporter (if using 2 or 3): 2 OPTIONS
1. Choose a neutral or toned-down version of the Signature color (e.g., if Signature is navy, select light blue) to create subtle repetition and flow.
2. Choose a muted color e.g. a secondary color from your room's color palette.
Secondary+ Supporter/s; 2 OPTIONS
1. Introduce variety by flipping the Primary Supporter's colors - i.e. making the color of the pattern of the Primary, the background color of this pillow (eg. white/neutral) & the background color of the Primary Support this pattern's color,
2. Use a contrasting neutral (e.g., soft white or beige) to add interest and visual rest.
3. Ensure alignment with pattern styles: Less decorative patterns (e.g., Minimalist Coastal) can handle bolder colors, while ornate (more decorative styles) definitely need softer tones to maintain a relaxing coastal look and feel.
Design Tips:
If your Signature Pillow's pattern is highly detailed/decorative, select at least one supporting pillow with a Minimalist style pattern or Modern style pattern with a white/neutral background color. This will provide visual rest and ensure your pillow combination has relaxing coastal vibes.
Supporting colors should never compete with or overpower your Signature Pillow color.
With these color assignments complete, your pillows will harmonize beautifully, enhancing your room's coastal charm and setting the foundation for the final layering step.
4. Write the names of your Supporter Pillows colors down on your piece of paper. Make a reference of the colors on your computer (if you can) for shopping later.
No matter what your room’s primary color is, always use white in some of your pillows (at least as the color of one pattern and one background). This ensures you include the coastal "freshness" only white can give you.
Now that you've established your foundational style (formal or casual), chosen your pattern styles, and defined your color palette, it's time for the exciting part: selecting the actual specific pillow designs and arranging them on your sofa!
Begin by searching online for pillow designs that match your selected Signature and Supporter Pattern Styles in the colors you chose earlier. Reference these when shopping to avoid impulse purchases that don't mess with your palette.
Begin by searching for a pillow whose specific pattern matches your selected Signature Pattern Style and Color (from Steps 3 and 6). This pillow should be your "hero"—captivating yet harmonious with your overall scheme.
EXAMPLE:
Signature Style: Beach Coastal
Signature Color: Muted Indigo Blue
Next, find pillows whose specific patterns align with your chosen Supporter Pattern Styles and Colors (from Steps 2 and 5). Remember, these should be less decorative and/or have a softer coastal reference than your Signature to create balance.
EXAMPLES
Supporter 1 Style: Classic Coastal
Supporter 1 Color: Sandy Neutral
Supporter 2 Style: Modern Coastal
Supporter 2 Color: Light Blue
Place your chosen pillow designs (or images of them) together. Do they flow? Does the Signature still pop? Do the Supporters play their role effectively? Adjust as needed to ensure perfect harmony.
The number and size of your pillows will greatly impact the overall aesthetic and comfort of your arrangement. This step combines practical considerations with your chosen foundational style.
Standard sofas (72-84 inches): 4 - 5 pillows is a versatile starting point.
Larger sofas: scale up with one pillow per 18-24 inches of seating.
Loveseats/chairs: use formula elements on a smaller scale.
Corner Pillows for Low-Back Sofas: choose slightly smaller or slightly taller pillow sizes (usually 20" to 22" squares - as average low-back seat height is 19 inches).
Corner Pillows For High-Back Sofas: 18" or 22" squares anchor the arrangement beautifully (Note: take depth of sofa into consideration).
For layering inward: same as corners, or next size smaller (18" or 20") squares work well.
For center lumbar: 13"x21", 12"x20", 14"x24", add an accent designer finish.
On smaller sofas, reduce overall size proportionally.
Select your corner pillows first—typically your largest pillows (18"to 22" square)
Once corner pillows are established, work your way inward with each layer.
Alternate between darker (starting at corners and lighter (eg white background) and then back to color - this adds depth to your pillow combination.
